Job Description

The club captain (equivalent to club chairperson) is responsible for the organisation and smooth running of all aspects of the club, with the aim of facilitating the performance of teams and ensuring the continued long-term develop of the club by working in close partnership with the head coach.

The club captain is also responsible for the constitution and democratic processes of the club, such as committee meetings and disciplinary hearings. The individual will also be required to co-ordinate the activities of appointed and elected club officers to achieve the club’s short- and long-term objectives.

Responsibilities

The Club Captain position is a yearly elected post whose proposals will require the approval of the club management committee.

The Club Captain is responsible for other elected committee positions, club coaches and referees and mentoring other members of the management committee and club volunteers.

Training and Support

It is envisaged that any new Club Captain will attend University of Birmingham Sport training days that cover most aspects of club organisation and University administration. Other training requests will be considered on individual basis when brought forward either by the post holder or the Head Coach.

The Club Captain will receive mentoring from the Head Coach and assistance from University of Birmingham Sport administrators.

Commitment

The time commitment of this post is approximately 6 hours each week, rising to 10 hours per week during the first month of the volleyball season.

In addition, the Club Captain is expected to:

  • Attend all club committee meetings.
  • Attend all AU/UBS meetings as appropriate.
  • Attend disciplinary committee meetings.
  • Attend meetings with the local authority & any other partners as required.
  • Act as the club’s representative at any other meetings as appropriate.

Main Duties

  1. Club Management
    1. Chair Club meetings, including Executive and AGMs, and ensure that action points are agreed and delegated and that minutes are taken and distributed to all club members and the coaching staff.
    2. Work with the Head Coach and Membership Officer to ensure that Club finances are efficiently managed and remain within budget.
    3. Work with the Head Coach and University of Birmingham Sport Management team to recruit and monitor the performance of coaches.
    4. Through effective delegation and supervision of Team Managers ensure that pre-, post- and match day preparations are carried out in accordance to the appropriate regulations.
    5. Deal promptly with any disciplinary issues that may occur within the club, informing University of Birmingham Sport and other club officials of causes and action taken.
    6. Ensure that the club is represented at all necessary meetings organised by University of Birmingham Sport, Volleyball England and other external organisation as required.
    7. Ensure, in conjunction with the Head Coach, the effective handover of all committee positions.
  2. Communication
    1. Communicate all decisions made by University of Birmingham Sport to all club officers through appropriate channels of communication established within the club.
    2. Ensure that requests for information by University of Birmingham Sport staff are responded to in a prompt manner either directly or through effective delegation.
    3. Regularly liaise with the club coaches and members to keep them informed of Committee decisions.
    4. Liaise with key agencies such as Governing Bodies of Sport and the Birmingham Sports Partnership where appropriate.
    5. Convey club requests in an appropriate and timely manner to University of Birmingham Sport.
  3. Leadership
    1. Lead the club by acting professionally at all times, displaying good conduct at all times and promoting an inclusive, respectful and winning atmosphere within the club.
    2. Lead the club committee and coaching staff in creating a highly committed and motivated club culture, whilst providing encouragement and support for the development and inclusion of players at all levels.
    3. Be capable of making fair, responsible and accountable decisions that are in the best interests of the long-term future of the club.
    4. Foster a sense of responsibility amongst all club officers for the importance of their roles in the management of the club.
    5. Support the incoming Club Captain during the handover period.

Expenses

All out-of-pocket expenses, such as telephone, printing and postage costs, will be reimbursed by the club. Funding for additional activities must be first approved by the management committee.

Skills and Qualities

This is a post that involves the management of other committee members undertaking varied duties and club members coming from diverse backgrounds so an ability to manage and relate well to people is essential.

This individual will also probably have an interest in, and perhaps an understanding of, the issues in university and community sport, along with a desire to work towards the long-term goals of a large and successful community sports club.
