Job Description

The Coach Development Officer will be responsible for the club’s coach development and mentoring structures. Through this they will be required to identify, train and mentor new and existing coaches to meet the club’s future coaching needs.

The Coach Development Officer will also monitor coach performance by undertaking coach peer reviews and through the Team Managers conduct player feedback surveys on a yearly basis for all the club’s coaches. They will also be responsible for drawing up Continuous Professional Development plans for all club coaches based on the coaching reviews and player feedback.

Responsibilities

The Coach Development Officer is responsible for the development, mentoring and training of all club coaches. They will also assist the committee in dealing with any disciplinary issues involving coaching staff.

The Coach Development Officer position is an appointed role for a suitably qualified individual determined by the club management committee and reviewed yearly. The post comes with voting rights at committee meetings.

Proposals by the Coach Development Officer will need to be approved by the club management committee.

Training and Support

Training requests by the Coach Development Officer will be considered on individual basis when brought forward either by the post holder or the Head Coach

The Coach Development Officer will receive support from the Head Coach.

Commitment

The time commitment of this post is envisaged to be 3 to 4 hours each week.

In addition, the Coach Development Officer is expected to:

  • Attend all club committee meetings.
  • Attend all AU/UBS meetings as appropriate.
  • Attend disciplinary committee involving club coaches meetings.
  • Act as the club’s representative at any other meetings as appropriate.

Main Duties

  1. Coach Recruitment and Management
    1. Work with the Head Coach to identify and recruit coaching talent within the club.
    2. Maintain the club’s coach development programme by co-ordinating mentoring and training opportunities for all coaches.
    3. Monitor the performance of coaches and conduct yearly member/player feedback exercises for all club coaches.
    4. Facilitate the continuous professional development of the club’s coaching staff by having annual reviews with each coach.
    5. Advise the management committee on development, management and strategic issues related to coach development.
    6. Support club coaches in the development of coaching programmes and sessions.
  2. Communication
    1. Regularly liaise with the club coaches to keep them informed of committee decisions and club policies.
    2. Liaise with the Head Coach and management committee over the development of sessions, players and coaching programs.
    3. Organize regular meetings between all club coaches to discuss any current coaching issues or problems likely to arise in the future.
    4. Keep both the club management committee and club coaches informed of national and local coach development initiatives and opportunities.
  3. Coach Development
    1. Make suggestions to the management committee on how the club can provide better opportunities for developing new and existing coaches.
    2. With the assistance of the Head Coach and Club Captain review coaching appointments.
    3. Provide training, either directly or through liaising with external agencies, for coaches within the club.
    4. Provide mentoring, support and feedback to help volunteers to be effective in their coaching duties.

Expenses

All out-of-pocket expenses, such as telephone, printing and postage costs, will be reimbursed by the club. Funding for additional activities must be first approved by the management committee.

Skills and Qualities

This is a post that involves a considerable amount of interaction with volunteer coaches in many different capacities. Experience and an understanding of volunteer coaching is essential.

This individual must be capable of maintaining an understanding of developments in both national and international coaching practices, continuous professional development methods and National Governing Body policies.
