Job Description
The Head Coach will work in partnership with the Club Captain and the management committee to facilitate the development of the club and sport of volleyball in line with the club’s mission statement and specified objectives.
At all times the Head Coach should work to improve the performance of all teams and increase participation in the sport at all levels of ability. Additionally, the Head Coach will be responsible for developing volunteering structures within the club and mentoring volunteers were appropriate.
Responsibilities
The Head Coach is responsible for other appointed committee positions, club coaches and referees and mentoring other members of the management committee and club volunteers.
The Head Coach position is an appointed role agreed between the Club Management committee and University of Birmingham Sport, with voting rights at committee meetings. Proposals by the Head Coach will need to be approved by the club management committee.
Training and Support
Training requests by the Head Coach will be considered on individual basis when brought forward by the post holder.
Commitment
The time commitment of this post is envisaged to be 6 hours each week, rising to 10 hours per week during the first month of the volleyball season.
In addition, the Head Coach is expected to:
- Attend all club committee meetings.
- Attend all AU/UBS meetings as appropriate.
- Attend disciplinary committee meetings.
- Attend meetings with the local authority & any other partners as required.
- Act as the club’s representative at any other meetings as appropriate.
Main Duties
- Club Management
- Assist the Club Captain in making sure action points are agreed and delegated and minutes are taken and distributed to all club members and the coaching team.
- Assist the Club Captain and Membership Officer in any financial planning required ensuring that Club finances are efficiently managed and projects remain within budget.
- Keep up-to-date on national and local sport development and funding agendas with the aim of ensuring that the club’s long-term development plans to into account these agendas.
- Work with the University of Birmingham Sport team to recruit and monitor the performance of coaches.
- Deal promptly with any coaching related disciplinary issues which may occur within the Club, informing University of Birmingham Sport of causes of action taken.
- Advise the Management committee on development, management and strategic issues, and ensure that these are reviewed regularly by the management committee.
- Ensure the effective handover of all club committee positions.
- Communication
- Communicate all decisions made by University of Birmingham Sport to all club coaches through appropriate channels of communication established within the club.
- Ensure that requests for information by University of Birmingham Sport staff are responded to in a prompt manner either directly or through effective delegation.
- Regularly liaise with the club coaches to keep them informed of committee decisions.
- Liaise with key agencies such as Governing Bodies of Sport and the Birmingham Sports Partnership where appropriate.
- Ensure the Club liaises with the Assistant Manager (Operations) on health and safety issues and risk assessments, advising on equipment maintenance and replacement.
- Work with Club Coaches to identify, recruit, support and develop young athletes with excellent academic qualifications and high performance potential.
- Volunteer Development
- Make suggestions to the management committee on how the club can provide better opportunities for volunteering.
- With the assistance of the club captain review and co-ordinate volunteer role outlines.
- Provide training, either directly or through liaising with external agencies, for volunteers within the club.
- Offering mentoring, support and feedback to help volunteers to be effective in their roles.
- Leadership
- Lead the Club by acting professionally on and off the field of play, displaying good conduct at all times promoting an inclusive, respectful and winning atmosphere within the Club.
- Lead the Club Committee and Coaches in creating a highly committed and motivated club culture, whilst providing encouragement and support for the development of players at all levels.
- Be aware of relevant rules and regulations, keeping up to date on any changes to rulings and ensuring that all relevant members of the club (especially team captains and coaches) have the same important level of knowledge.
- Support the incoming Club Captain, and other management committee members, during the hand-over period.
Expenses
All out-of-pocket expenses, such as telephone, printing and postage costs, will be reimbursed by the club. Funding for additional activities must be first approved by the management committee.

Skills and Qualities
This is a post that involves a considerable amount of hand-on management and co-operation with other volunteers in many different capacities. Experience and an understanding of volunteering is essential.
Also, as the individual will be responsible for the development of the club must be capable of maintaining an understanding of developments in UK sport, National Governing Body policies and funding opportunities.
