BUCS Women In Sheffield For Second Year Running
Wednesday 17th February 2010

The squad that will be ready to do battle in Sheffield.
UBVC's women's BUCS team have made it through to the BUCS championships in Sheffield for the second year in a row following a hard fought knock out victory away in Cardiff. Having battled through a long season the girls deserve their moment in the sun in the culmination of the BUCS calender.
After beginning the year with a fairly new and inexperienced team, the girls could be forgiven for seeing a place at the Sheffield event as wishful thinking. However, after impressing coach Fabrizio Marrama with their commitment to training and improving, they have been able to defy the odds and book their place in the season ending spectacular.
Following the final league game of the season the girls put themselves in with a chance of a favourable draw in the early rounds of the Trophy. This came in the shape of Warwick, a team the girls had beaten twice already this season, at home. However the match was not as comfortable as expected and the team was taken to a tight 5 set match before emerging victorious to book their place in the second round, away at Cardiff.
With Cardiff boasting an ex-Birmingham national league player in the shape of Philippa Sheldon Birmingham knew that they were not going to have an easy ride. However after a long journey to south Wales followed by yet another 5 set match, the girls were able to take the victory, 16-14 in the fifth set, after battling back from 12-14 down and book their place in March's champonships
The team now moves onto yet another year representing the clubs student teams in Sheffield. With players showing constant improvement, coach Marrama must be looking forward to preparing his team for the semi finals, and the chance of bringing the first silverware of the season to the club. UBVC wishes the girls every success as they prepare for the next round. If you wish to travel to Sheffield to offer your support for the girls, please contact a committee member for details.
