Men's NVL Firsts Vs. Middlesbrough 2
Sunday 13th December 2009
The Men's First team travelled away to Nottingham for their final games before Christmas. Both games promised to be tricky and the boys had to be on their guard for the games. With a later than usual start away from Birmingham the team was ready for action rather than being their usual sluggish early morning selves.
The game against Middlesbrough started well with the boys keeping ahead in the set against a Middlesbrough team that had already played 4 sets that morning. Some good attack from Nikolay Nikolov and Lewis Grant saw the team take a lead in the first set and despite not being able to keep the mistakes out of their game. The second set started as the first with the boys losing the first 2 points but with some good distribution from setter Carl Butcher coupled with good attack from all of the hitters and strong passing the team were able to establish a lead. However once again the errors crept back into the game and the Birmingham team allowed Middlesbrough back into the set. However some more strong attack allowed Birmingham to see the set over the line and take a 2-0 advantage. The third set saw coach Graham Fowler making changes with Ronald Koko replacing Nikolov and Marcin Pavlak replacing Grant. However some strong blocking and attack from middle Kieron Bradley allowed the Birmingham team to take a commanding 7-2 lead in the set. Despite this Birmingham still didn't push on but never looked in real danger of losing the set and eventually ran out winners of the set and match 3-0.
MVP Carl Butcher.
