Men's NVL Firsts Vs. Newcastle City

After a long journey up to Newcastle and a late(-ish) night, Birmingham looked very tired for today's game. UoB had a squad of only eight players, much smaller than any game all season. Ronald started the game well with some fine hitting from outside and UoB racking up an early lead. The passing wasn't the best from UoB, however Newcastle's serve receive was weak enough for us to take points.

The second set started badly for UoB, with Newcastle taking a quick lead. UoB were noticeably quiet on court and very sluggish. With Grant Huddleston struggling with a cold, and the rest of the team struggling with tiredness, UoB had to start to knuckle down or would risk letting a set slip away. UoB began to battle back and with Newcastle not taking their chances, UoB brought the game back to 20-18 in Newcastle's favour. Kieron was brought on for Bertrand and UoB continued the battle. Great hitting from Ronald and good defensive work backcourt enabled UoB to eventually take the set25-21.

The third set started the same way it finished, with Bertrand and Graham on the bench. UoB started loud and looked a lot more awake on court, with UoB starting the set with a fast 5-0 lead. Much improved hitting from Thegan and Grant, along with hard hits from Ronald allowed UoB to cruise to a big lead of 20-10. Thegan was brought off for a rest and Graham was put on as a opposite hitter. Newcastle never brought it back, and UoB went on to a comfortable third set win.
