Men's NVL Firsts Vs. Newcastle (Staffs) II
Sunday 25th March 2007
UoB needed to go into this game the way they finished the last; with energy and enthusiasm, and that was what happened for most of the game. Fred and Thegan were rested, giving Kieron the chance to show what he is capable of through the middle. Newcastle Staffs were beaten badly in the last meeting with UoB, and UoB wanted to ensure the result would be the same, as they need a 3-0 win for the push for promotion.
UoB started strong, putting on a huge lead of 18-7, due to some great hitting from Grant and Bertrand and some good defence on court. UoB continued the onslaught and won the first set with ease. The second was a lot closer than the first, with UoB making a lot of unforced errors. Points went back and forth until the score was standing at 12-13 to UoB. UoB stepped up a gear, and with big hits from Grant and Ronald, UoB started taking a small lead. After a poor start, UoB went on to win the second set quite comfortably.
The third set was again a firm favourite for UoB, and the team went out fast and strong, building a small lead. Some good blocking from Bertrand and Kieron, and good hitting from Grant and Ronald gave UoB the advantage. With Pete setting brilliantly for the hitters, he decided to get in on the act and began making some decisive blocks and some excellent hits. UoB finished the demolition and took the third set. UoB had won 3-0.
UoB needed to win both matches 3-0 to put the pressure on joint leaders Warwick Riga II; with Warwick playing their final matches at the same time as UoB. Warwick went on to win their matches 3-0 & 3-0 (however very close), so the league finishes with UoB and Warwick at the head of the table. Warwick and UoB finish on the same number of points and same set difference as each other, however with Warwick winning one more set than UoB, Warwick take the title. The play-offs await the University of Birmingham team.
