Women's BUCS Vs. Loughborough University
Wednesday 22nd October 2008
The women's BUCS team first match of the season on home soil saw a thrilling 5 set battle against Loughborough. Loughborough started strong taking the first set 25-17 and seemed to be on a winning streak after going 8-0 up in the second set as well. However, Birmingham responded well with some great serving by Ann Wokun pulled Birmingham back into the set. At 24-24 both teams played some clever shots but finally after some great pick-ups from Rachel Coestake and Stefania Lanzini Birmingham claimed the second set 26-24.
Loughborough came back strong in the third set taking the lead but, even after some great hitting from Virginija Lesciauskaite and Aimee Nixon, Birmingham were not able to take hold of the set, losing 16-25.
At 2-1 down it was make or break time for the Birmingham girls and unwilling to admit defeat just yet Birmingham came together as a team to produce some great game plays and tactical shots. Emma Goosey produced some incredible serves and Birmingham took this crucial set 25-22.
The nerves mounted as Birmingham stepped on court for the fifth and final set. Anna Blake’s setting continued to be accurate and strong enabling some powerful attacks through the middle. Loughborough pulled a few points ahead but, even with the support and cheers from the home crowd, Birmingham were unable to keep up and lost the final set 15-9 and ultimately the match.
After such a strong performance on only their second time of playing together, this year’s women’s BUSA team is looking for a win in their next match.
