Men's NVL Firsts Vs. Newcastle City
Sunday 29th October 2006
The University of Birmingham, for the first time this season, had their full strength squad with no injuries. In the stands sat two German players who trained with the team last week and look set to sign for the team in the coming weeks.
Confidence within the squad was high and so coach, Graham Fowler, fielded a very strong line up for the first set and it showed. Birmingham won it in under 16 minutes, 25-8. Grant served up 8 points quickly and with strong blocking from Bertrand Olie and Fred Olivo, along with strong hitting from the wing hitters, it was over very fast.
For the second and third set, the team was changed, making way for the less experienced players to shine. The second set was again won quickly by the University of Birmingham with some great hitting from both the wing and middle players. The third set however was different, with the University side going down 25-20 due to a string of unforced errors and "interesting" referee calls. The University fielded a strong line up for the fourth set and won quite quickly 25-21.
