Men's NVL Firsts Vs. City of Preston
Sunday 5th November 2006
After playing Preston not too long ago and beating them quite convincingly, the team went into this game with a lot of confidence. However, after two hours of the M6 and playing what was the team's first away game of the season, we never got going straight away as we were making quite a few unforced errors and the first set was fairly even.
The game started with the University of Birmingham fielding their strongest line up, but once the team started playing well and established a small lead, coach Graham Fowler was able to make some changes to the line up.
Sascha Singer and Ronald Koko were brought on to replace the first choice hitters, Thegan Moodley and Grant Huddleston, and Pete Melia was brought on to replace first choice setter Varinder Mattri.
Even when fielding some younger players, the team continued to dominate the match with some excellent power hitting from Singer and Koko. Olivo and Olie remained as the main blockers for most of the match but were given an occasional rest when English youngster Kieron Bradley and Polish player, Pawel Palak to continue the onslaught.
The University side went on to win the match well with the squad proving they are a strong unit.
