How to Volunteer
Saturday 3rd January 2009
Anyone can volunteer but there are a few things it is worth thinking about first:
What would you like to do?
It is a good idea to first decide what it is you would like to do – it does not matter if you have no experience in that particular area that’s why volunteering is great, you can learn new things in a safe and supportive environment.
Time commitment
Know how much time you are prepared to commit each week or each month; it is very easy for very simple tasks to end up taking more of your time than you expect.
What do you want to achieve?
Have a realist goal of what you would like to have achieved in one month, six months or even in one year; this way you can have a better idea of what you might achieve as a volunteer and what you will learn along the way – it will also give us, the club, a better understanding of how to support you.
Do you want to register your volunteering?
Think about registering your volunteering time and having it nationally recognised, if you are still at school or university, employers like prospective employees that have learnt a few things outside of their educational settings.
If you are under 19 year of age you can volunteer with the club through the Step Into Sport programme. This is organised by Birmingham City Council and the club is a registered provider of volunteering placements through SiS.
University students can register themselves through their Guild of Students and have their volunteering time accredited by V.
Talk to the right person
After all that, arrange a time to chat to Graham Fowler, he is the club’s volunteer co-ordinator and will happily find time to talk to you.
